This is the title of a book I'm currently reading. Written by Johnathan Kirsch. "It's the story of how classical paganism, with a tolerance for many deities and beliefs, lost the centuries-long struggle with monotheism and its chauvanistic insistence in belief in one God."

Just coming out of fundamentalism I found this an informative eye-opener of the things they don't talk about at church. Mainly because many of them don't know their own history aside from what they're spoon-fed.

I came up with another idea of what Fundamentalists and Evangelicals are experiencing and that is they are "conditioned" in thinking a certain way and it prevents them from objective thinking. Whenever one starts thinking in that manner another one recognizes the non Borg activity and quickly injects terminology to alert them to this and bring them back in line.

Most of the time it only requires a Bible quote or simply a quick word or two and zap back to the fold.

Oh yeah. That's for sure. And they threaten your salvation. Don't forget they're rejection = God's rejection and you're on the express chute to the netherworld unless you stop all this nonsense of asking questions. I never understood why but it seems their faith is such frail thing. It can't take exposure to the truth or even a good challenge to it. They begin making stuff up "God gave me a dream about you, and you're baaaad" or they get angry "Ha! I can't WAIT for God to DEAL with YOU!" Not much Christ-like love there IMHO.
