On a recent Podcast (Radio Liberty) an author Craig Heimbichner commented on various (gasp) Secret Societies and said they have a duality at the heart of their beliefs.

Well I submit that Christianity does as well, but is rarely seen or even less accused of it.

You have Jesus and Satan. One could easily admit this and say ok so what?

The simple nature of this duality allows for easy classification.

One if it fits the conditioning and a quote from the many "versions" of the Bible can be offered up then it is usually considered "good", when a subject that is offered that requires a person to think objectively and possibly affect their conditioning then it is termed "Satanic" and thus the area now labeled is to be avoided.

This is a built in fail-safe to prevent a follower from being exposed to anything that could cause them to evaluate their beliefs and thereby eliminate the need to explain further.

All one has to do to see an example is to look at any Christian forum or Podcast where another religion, belief and/or Magick is a topic and you will find clear concise portions that prove this.

Yes there is a sense of duality in Christianity.

Call it God/Anti-God whatever.

Oddly, may years ago I was working on a Wiccan philosophical excersize that i had created. It was one of the supprisingly scariest things.

In Wicca there is no "satan", "lucifer", "devil".

Being a "good little pagan" at the time, I felt I needed to explore that for myself. I was amazed at how much the concept of Satan had really gotten into the deeper parts of my subconscious. In addition to which I found (for me personally) the notion that Satan/Lucifer/Devil/evilBadwhatever _not_ existing was absoloutely horrifying. It was really suprising.

On a social level, religions _need_ a bad guy.

If the average person isnt scared of hell, will they pay tithe to the church ?

Allow me to play the devil's advocate. lol I actually do believe in a devil. I think most do, but we know them by differant names. Some say they are really pissed off angry negatives spirits, some call them entities, astrals, interdimensonal, etc.... To me it is all the same really. However unlike some of the Hollywood movies and their portrayal of possession I do not believe possession is that common. I think *influenced* is a better word. For centuries humankind has had mixed emotions about the spiriitual world. Sort of a love hate relationship you could say. Even diseases were seen as caused by demons. The ancient Romans often referred to seizures as morbus daemoniacus, morbus dieficus. Disease of demons, disease of gods. Hell even Grand Mal translates into great evil. The Jesuits have not allowed anyone in their order with the disease since the 1500's. You would think they would have changed the rule by now.

Here is another thought that I had. If God created everything in the universe, and it is all under his control, and knew us from the beginning of time, then it also shows us that he knew this great angel he created to worship him would fall. So, could one argue then that the Devil is also doing God's will? I often think to, if he knew that then why did he create him? What kind of God would enjoy having a collection of human souls in a fiery pit for all of eternity? Just a thought. I have a million of them.

Isn't one aspect of dualism that both opposites are considered equal? I don't see how a fair reading of the Bible can come away with the idea that Satan and the forces of darkness are in any way equal to God. So therefore Christianity is not dualistic.

I think the answer to this delemma is that God looks at how people are *now* rather than how they might be in the future. Consider the case of King Saul, whose personality changed quite alot as he was King. He started out not thinking himself worthy to be king (he hid from Samuel) and ended up willing to commit murder to stay king (he tried to kill David).

This reminds me of that Tom Cruise movie whose name I can't remember based on a book by Phillip K. Dick (I think). The police have four 'seers' who can see future crimes. They use this information to arrest people before they even can commit the crime. But is it morally acceptable to punish someone for a crime they haven't yet committed even if you're sure they will do it?
